우리는 우리 앞에 나타나는 감정을 해독할 수 없습니다. 마치 창문에 떨어지는 빗방울처럼, 예고도 없이, 허락도 없이 찾아옵니다. 때로는 넘쳐흐르기도 하고, 종종 우리를 놀라게 하며, 우리가 애써 통제하려는 그 어떤 것보다 더 많은 것을 말해줍니다. 무엇이 우리를 감동시키고, 무엇이 우리를 흔들고, 무엇이 갑자기 우리 안에 틈을 벌리게 할지 우리는 선택할 수 없습니다. 감정은 통제할 수 있는 것이 아니라, 경험하고 나서야 비로소 이해되는 것입니다.

When Emotions Cross Us

We do not decipher the emotions that cross us. They come like rain in a window: without warning, without asking permission. They sometimes overflow, often surprise us, and say much more than we do than anything we try to master. We do not choose what touches us, what shakes us, or what suddenly opens a gap in us. Emotions are not commanded, if they live, if they understand each other later.

QUANDO AS EMOÇÕES NOS CRUZAM

Nós não deciframos as emoções que nos atravessam. Eles vêm como chuva numa janela: sem aviso, sem pedir licença. Elas às vezes transbordam, muitas vezes nos surpreendem, e dizem muito mais do que nós do que qualquer coisa que tentamos dominar. Não escolhemos o que nos toca, o que nos abala, ou o que de repente abre uma lacuna em nós. Emoções não se comanda, se vivem, se entendem depois.
