The book was sold at Christie’s auction house in New York to Bill Gates for $30.8 million.
The Codex contains 72 pages on 36 sheets and is estimated to have been written between 1504 and 1508.
The manuscript contains Da Vinci’s speculations on why the sky is blue and why fossils can be found on mountaintops. It also predicts the invention of the submarine and the steam engine. The tiny handwriting is backward because the artist, who was left-handed and loved optical tricks, wrote from right to left using a mirror, apparently to help disguise his theories. The illustrations depict everything from diagrams of bridges to parts of the moon.
