어느 날 한 남자가 소크라테스에게 와서 물었습니다.
- 친구가 당신에 대해 뭐라고 했는지 아십니까?
"잠깐만요." 소크라테스가 말을 가로채며 말했습니다. "먼저 세 개의 체로 무슨 말을 할지 살펴보세요!" 첫 번째 체는 진실의 체입니다! 당신이 하는 말이 사실이라고 확신하십니까?
- 아니요. 방금 들었어요...
- 아주 좋아요. 그러니까 사실인지 아닌지 모르시는 거군요!? 그럼 두 번째 체, 즉 선의 체로 가보죠! 제 친구에 대해 좋은 말을 하고 싶으신가요?
- 아니요! 반대입니다!
"그럼" 소크라테스가 말을 이었습니다. "그에 대해 나쁜 말을 하려고 하지만 사실인지 확신하지 못하시는 거군요!?" 세 번째 체, 즉 유용성의 체로 가보죠! 정말 당신이 하는 말을 들어야 하나요?
- 아니요! 그럴 필요 없어요!
- 그러니까! - 소크라테스는 이렇게 결론지었습니다: - 당신이 말하고자 하는 것에 진실도, 친절도, 이익도 없습니까? 그럼 왜 말합니까?

Before you say anything, think three times!
One day a man came to Socrates and asked:
- Do you know what your friend told me about you?
“Wait,” Socrates interrupted. “First, see what you are going to say through three sieves!” The first sieve is the sieve of truth! Are you sure that what you are saying is true?
- NO. I just heard...
- Very good. So you don't know if it is true or not!? Then let's go through the second sieve - the sieve of goodness! Do you want to say something good about my friend?
- NO! Against!
“So,” Socrates continued, “you are going to say something bad about him, but you are not sure if it is true!?” Let's go through the third sieve - the sieve of utility! Do I really have to hear what you have to say?
- No! It is not necessary!
- So! - Socrates concluded: - Is there no truth, no kindness, no benefit in what you want to say? Then why talk?
