Finally, in the fourth step, the symbol has nothing to do with any reality. It is a self-pure simulacre, producing "reality: surreal, without origin or reality." 15 In this surreal state, the map precedes the territory, and models and symbols no longer represent reality, but actively create reality. 16
This concept provides a strong critique of modern economic systems. Baudrillard argued that classical Marxist analysis focused on the value of use and exchange was insufficient to understand consumer society. 19 He introduced the concept of sign value. Sign value is the value of an object in a sign system, which is related to reputation, style, and status. 15 In a consumer society, individuals are mainly led to participate in symbolic exchanges of meaning rather than their usefulness, pursue identity and validity through the acquisition of symbols, and acquire goods. 15 This logic drives the endless cycle of consumption and strengthens the power of media and advertising to select and disseminate symbols. 21 The economy itself becomes a surreal phenomenon increasingly separate from the material reality of production and labor. It operates in the realm of abstract symbols and simulations exemplified by modern financial instruments such as complex and separate collateral liabilities, which can be regarded as simulacres that are not similar to their original assets at all. 17 In this surreal economy, political campaigns become spectacle of image management, and individuals become passive consumers of pre-packaged simulations. 15
If Baudrillard's surrealism explains the content of this socioeconomic simulation, then "Capitalist Realism" by post-cultural theorist Mark Fisher. Concept describes its system of operation. Fisher defines capitalist realism as "not only the only viable political and economic system, but also the widespread perception that it is now impossible to even imagine a coherent alternative to it." 23 It is not an explicit ideology consciously adopted, but an "invisible barrier" to political imagination as a "plain atmosphere" that defines all thoughts and actions. It plays a role. 23 This ideological framework functions as a simulation by defining the absolute boundaries of what is considered possible or realistic.
Capitalist realism operates through several core mechanisms. One is "Business Ontology", which reduces all values to business terms that are justified only when public services such as education and healthcare conform to market logic and the pseudo-market mechanisms of constant auditing and competition. 25 Another is the opposite "pre-corporateization". Anti-capitalist gestures and symbols are quickly commodified, resold to consumers in the form of edge branding, neutralizing their destructive potential and strengthening the system they intend to oppose itself.
